Rescue winch selection: functions, fit and documents

What should a rescue winch quotation confirm?

Ask the supplier to identify the winch, support, mounting bracket and connecting equipment, then document which functions the proposed configuration supports. Keep personnel lifting, material handling, fall arrest and emergency retrieval as separate questions. A brake description or a load figure alone does not answer them.

Start with the listed equipment

The PST-361 product page lists a tripod-and-winch package and separate component figures. Use it to identify the equipment in your enquiry, then request the current instructions and documents for the exact offer. Availability of alternative models or power options must be confirmed in writing.

Intended functionsWhich model and instructions support each requested task: personnel raising/lowering, material handling, fall arrest or emergency retrieval? Record any unsupported or unconfirmed function.
Mounting compatibilityIdentify the support and bracket by model or part number. Ask for the manufacturer documentation covering the proposed combination; a similar-looking attachment is not enough to assume compatibility.
Limits and line specificationRequest the documented limits for the intended configuration and clarify what each rating describes. Confirm the supplied line, usable range and any relevant restrictions in the instructions.

Why the exact model matters

The 3M Salalift/Salalift II manual separates application types and includes model-specific limitations and system requirements. It is a reference example, not an operating manual or approval for PST-361.

3M also lists Sealed-Blok self-retracting lifelines with an emergency retrieval feature on selected models. That shows why a device name alone cannot establish the functions of every variant. It does not establish availability or compatibility with the equipment offered here.

Buyer questions

Does a winch brake establish fall-arrest capability?

No. Request documentation for the exact device and system that will provide any required fall-arrest function. Do not treat a brake label as evidence of that function or infer a personnel rating from a component number.

Can every winch be fitted to every tripod?

Do not assume so. Request the exact support, bracket and winch combination and the manufacturer evidence for compatibility. Have the responsible equipment reviewer resolve substitutions and unanswered questions.

Are electric winches or higher-capacity models available?

Send the required function and configuration through the contact page. Ask for model availability, supporting documents, price and delivery timing in the written quotation. This page does not confirm an electric range or a generic capacity range.
